10 times the Hulk died in Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics made the Hulk one of the characters in its line of comics that will never die. There are even stories that have shown the entire planet to suffer a catastrophic event where almost everyone died, but the Hulk was still there, at one time the last human alive on Earth. However, even with his immortality, the Hulk has died in comic book stories.

Most of the time, the Hulk dies, and then there’s a way he’ll come back from the grave, and Marvel Comics presented the perfect explanation for that with his green door in the Lower Place. However, there are also stories from Elseworlds where he remained dead, and times when the Hulk died and something else came back to take his place.

ten Onslaught – Death of the Marvel Universe

Hulk in a cocoon after Onslaught.

In the 1990s, Marvel Comics decided it was time to shake things up and set up a time when everything in the world changed. It started in the pages of X-Men where an evil entity appeared called Onslaught, a mixture of Professor X and Magneto, and it almost destroyed the world.

The Avengers and Fantastic Four died to stop him. During this ultimate sacrifice, the Hulk also passed away. Jean Gray has shut down Bruce Banner’s brain, turning the Hulk into a savage. The two ended up going their separate ways, and the Hulk found himself in an irradiated cocoon, one that completely killed the Hulk, which led to the horn of a new Hulk.

9 Punisher Kills Marvel Universe – Frank Shoots Hulk

Punisher shoots Bruce Banner.

Marvel posted a funny story titled Punisher kills the Marvel universe, where its origin has radically changed. Instead of Frank Castle’s wife and children dying at the hands of gangsters, sending him on a path of revenge against the criminals, they died in a superhero battle.

After the death of his family, Punisher immediately killed Cyclops. He then started killing all the superheroes, ending with himself. For the Hulk, Frank put a tracker on him and waited for him to become Bruce Banner again. Punisher then killed Banner, and in this case, the Hulk never saved him.

8 Deadpool kills the Marvel universe – Deadpool beheads the Hulk

Deadpool beheads the Hulk with swords.

Deadpool had a comic book story in which he not only killed the entire Marvel Universe, but he also jumped into the multiverse and killed the writers and artists who created his own comics. Because he knows he’s a fictional character, it really made it easier for him to see it through.

For the Hulk, Deadpool attacked the Hulk and the big green guy tore him apart. After that, the Hulk reverted to Bruce Banner, not realizing Deadpool would regenerate, and the Merc with a Mouth took out their swords and cut Banner’s head off.

7 Maestro – Gamma Bomb Explodes Hulk

The gamma bomb explodes and kills Maestro.

One of the most popular storylines in Hulk history came when he was thrown into an alternate future where the Hulk became Maestro, a ruthless ruler of nuclear apocalypse survivors. It was later shown that the Hulk ended up taking control of a world ruled by Hercules and then demanded bondage or death.

The Hulk saw his future alternate self and decided he had to save this world by stopping Maestro. The Hulk had no chance of winning in a battle of power, as Maestro was stronger and more deadly. Instead, he used Banner’s brain and sent Maestro back in time to the time of the first gamma explosion that turned Banner into the Hulk, and that explosion destroyed Maestro.

6 Old Man Logan – Wolverine Kills Hulk

Old Man Logan breaks into Hulk's body.

Another alternate future of Earth saw Wolverine accidentally kill all members of the X-Men through Mysterio’s cunning. After that, Logan gave up and went into a secluded retreat, watching all the villains team up to defeat America’s heroes and take over the country.

The Hulk took over as the leader of the West Coast, going completely evil. He even had children with his cousin She-Hulk. It was when his children murdered Logan’s family that the Hulk family was doomed. Logan killed all of the Hulk children and fought the Hulk. The Hulk then ate Logan, which allowed Wolverine to regenerate inside and out of the Hulk, killing him instantly.

5 Incredible Hulk – Betty Ross Pulls A Banner From Behind

Betty Ross shoots Bruce Banner in the head.

The comic book series Indestructible hulk ended in issue 20 with a huge mystery. The final panel saw Bruce Banner, who was now working with SHIELD, standing with a smile on his face when someone approached behind him and shot him in the back of the neck.

The mystery was later solved when Pontoon # 1 brought back a very different character. The Hulk was gone and dead and the replacement was Doc Green, a very intelligent Hulk who no longer considered himself Bruce Banner at all. The person who shot Banner was Betty Ross, as she believed he was going to cause an extinction level event.

4 What if … Planet Hulk – Hulk dies in Sakaar

Caiera holding Iron Man's helmet in What If Planet Hulk.

Most of the time when iconic characters die in a book, it happens in the What if…? cartoon line. This included the Hulk, and one of the most interesting stories changed what happened in Sakaar into Planet Hulk. This story originally ended with an explosion that killed the Hulk’s wife and unborn son and sent him to Earth for revenge.

In What if … the planet Hulk, it was the Hulk who died in the explosion. In this case, the Hulk sacrificed his own life to save his wife, Caiera. This has changed World War Hulk, and it was Caiera who came to Earth for revenge, and she killed several characters including Sentry and Doctor Strange.

3 Civil War II – Hawkeye kills Bruce Banner

Hawkeye kills Hulk with an arrow.

In Second civil war, Captain Marvel led a group of heroes to arrest people who had never committed a crime based on an inhuman precog who could see the possibilities of the future. One of Odysseus’ visions was the Hulk causing massive death and destruction.

Captain Marvel and other heroes have gone to arrest Bruce Banner. He was not in his Hulk form, but before they could stop him, Hawkeye shot him an arrow in the head, killing him. Hawkeye was cleared of the murder charges when the video proved that Bruce Banner asked him to kill him if he was in danger of losing control again, and Banner even provided the arrow to Hawkeye.

2 Hulk: The End – The Death of Bruce Banner

Bruce Banner decides to die in Hulk The End.

Marvel Comics created books that showed the end of the line for some of its heroes and in Hulk: the end, it showed that the whole world was devastated and that all humans were dead except the Hulk. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner wandered the Earth like an old man.

Banner has died more than once, but the Hulk’s regenerative powers have always brought him back. That changed in the end when the Hulk and Banner decided they didn’t need each other anymore. The Hulk let Banner die and then sat alone at the end.

1 Immortal Hulk – Hulk dies over and over again

Harpie kills the immortal Hulk.

Immortal hulk ultimately showed why the Hulk always came back from the dead. When the Hulk died, he didn’t go to hell like normal people. He goes to Below-Place, which is run by One Below All. This is a version of Hell that’s only for gamma-powered people, and they all have a way back.

In this new book, Bruce Banner died multiple times and was resurrected when the sun went down as the Hulk. This is because the Hulk would return to Earth through the green door. It wasn’t until the door turned red that a person knew there was no turning back. By the end of this series, the Hulk was dead, Banner was lost, and Joe Fixit was back in a very different version of the green goliath.
