Excerpt from the debut graphic novel Sweet Valley Twins, released today
In 2019, Dynamite Entertainment released a Sweet Valley High graphic novel, based on the popular YA novels of the same name. Originally announced in 2016, written by Katy Rex and designed by Devaki Neogi, it was supposed to be the first in a series of such volumes, but it was not to be. In the years since, however, there has been a boom in sales of children’s and YA graphic novels, and Random House Graphic awaits the new Sweet Valley Twins: Best Friends spin-off graphic novel Nicole Andelfinger, Claudia Aguirre, Andrea Bell, Hara Gagström and Warren Montgomery to be “THE best-selling YA graphic novel of the season” based on incoming orders.
Sweet Valley High was a series of MG/YA novels credited to Francine Pascal, who led a team of ghostwriters, about the lives of identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, in Sweet Valley, California. Sweet Valley High began in 1983 and ended twenty years later with 181 books published. More recently Sweet confidential valley and The sweet life the books caught up with the characters as adults. A TV series aired for four series and former Doublemint twin models Brittany and Cynthia Daniel played Jessica and Elizabeth respectively, and later appeared on the covers of book editions.
Sweet Valley Twins was the first spin-off of the novels, featuring the main characters from sixth grade and middle school, and written by Jamie Suzanne, a pseudonym for another changing group of writers. And this is the series adapted into graphic novels by Nicole Andelfinger and Claudia Aguirre and the first book, Sweet Valley Twins: Best Friends, published today by Random House Graphics.
Francine Pascal said, “It’s so fun to see my characters practically alive! Nicole and Claudia did an amazing job, and I’m very excited to work with them.” Nicole Andelfinger added “Another thing that I love about this reboot is that we can really push for this diverse landscape that is much more familiar to readers today. It was great fun watching Claudia add some fun and styling to the background characters, and I’m sad we didn’t meet more of them! One of the styling choices consciously made in this remake was the addition of what I called “journal-style” drawings throughout the book. As someone who constantly doodled on my papers in school, I felt like we’d be remiss to make a tween book without some kind of flair artistic! Claudia really brought it out of the game, adding these little touches to help bring focus or just add a bit of humor to the book.” “Sweet Valley Twins is a series that meant a lot to so many people,” said Claudia Aguire. “I loved bringing Jessica and Elizabeth to life in these graphic novels for new and old fans, and I hope everyone loves them as much as I do!”
I’m an almost 50 year old Brit who had never heard of the books, TV series…but have now been introduced to graphic novels. And I know the creators of these. Nicole Andelfinger is best known as the author of Boom Studios Power Rangers comics, as well as The Black Crystal, Munchkin and Adventure time comics. While Claudia Aguirre is best known for her work as an artist and colorist with Mags Visaggio on Kim & Kim, Morning in America, Lost on Planet Earth and The quantum teenagers are gone, as well as comic series coloring We are the danger and draw the comic series Two of hearts. Chief Editor Whitney Leopard at Random House Graphics is editor of the series, and she acquired worldwide rights from agents Amy Berkower, CEO of Writers House, and Kate McKeanvice-president of the literary agency Howard Morhaim.
