girlpuppy shares ‘I Want To Be There’, the latest single from her debut album
Girlpuppy (Becca Harvey) shared “I Want To Be There”, the second single from her debut album, When I’m alone, released October 28 on Royal Mountain Records. The album, produced by Slow Pulp member Henry Stoehr and Alex G guitarist Sam Acchione, captures what Harvey describes as his “Bella era” (a reference to Bella Swan from the Dusk Saga), as she struggles to be alone.
His final offering from the album, “I Want To Be There,” is an acoustic pivot to folk-pop. As Harvey laments, “So sick of being alone / Tell me where all my friends have gone? / I wanna be there two places / All at once,” it sounds like an emotional tussle as his heart is pulled in different directions. The fast guitars act like a rip current, dragging Harvey deeper into an uneasiness that leaves her struggling to find the right words and unable to leave her bed. Stripping the excuses and facing her feelings head-on of loneliness, Harvey distills the discomfort of being forced to face each other.
“I wrote ‘I want to be there’ about the pain I felt when my former landlord kicked me and three of my best friends out of our dream house and my three roommates moved to New York,” says Harvey. “I found myself on my own in Atlanta and it was a really bad time for me. I was unemployed and felt like I had no friends, which made me wonder what was wrong with me, which kind of drove me to self-hate. I like to call this one the “self-hate anthem” of the album.
