Netflix has released the official trailer for the upcoming queer Polish thriller Operation Hyacinth. The upcoming murder mystery will be available on the streaming service on October 13, 2021.

Directed by Piotr Domalewski, the trailer for Operation Hyacinth is quite intense. It opens in an interrogation room where gay men are harshly interrogated. In the 80s, you can just feel the homophobia emanating from the images.

For those who don’t know, the premise of this movie is based on a real event. There was actually a mass secret operation of the same name by the Polish communist police between 1985 and 1987. The aim was to create a national database of Polish homosexuals and people in contact with these people. The operation registered around 11,000 people.

The main role of the film is a young police officer named Robert (Tomasz Zietek) who is working on a murder case that involves a person who kills gay people. During the investigation, Robert meets Arek (Hubert Milkowski) and uses him as an informant. Of course, judging by the trailer and promotional material, the professional relationship between them is starting to become something else. You can see a very conflicted Robert in the trailer. Even when the investigation is closed by the superiors, Robert continues his pursuit to find the killer.

I don’t know if Robert is supposed to be bisexual or gay. Maybe I read too much and Robert is an ally who just wants to help? I doubt it, but I guess we’ll find out about Rober’s sexuality soon enough.

Here is the trailer!

As for why I decided to click on this trailer when it appeared on my YouTube feed, well, the word Hyacinth reminded me of Apollo’s boyfriend and the Thumbnail genre had the weird look. I don’t know if I can explain it properly. It’s just that, in my opinion, I feel like I have a very sensitive gaydar. And so, I decided to watch the trailer. And it’s a good thing that I did and learned about this upcoming movie.

Operation Hyacinth was written by Marcin Ciastoń. The cast also includes Marek Kalita, Adrianna Chlebicka, Tomasz Schuchardt, Sebastian Stankiewicz, and more.

I am definitely interested in watching this movie.

And you?
