Action Comics # 1 (DC, 1938) CGC Conserved FN-5.5 Cream with off-white pages. The stature of this iconic number is only growing every year. By far the most valuable comic ever published, Overstreet’s rated value increased from 2019 to 2020 by an amount that exceeded the total value of all but the top eight books on its list of the Top 100 Comics in the World. ‘Golden age! And it invariably brings in much more than the indicative prices. We last sold a universal copy three years ago, and our current offering is the most attractive copy we have offered in almost five years. The origin and first appearance of Superman kicked off the golden age of comics. Joe Shuster provided the cover and story art for Superman’s story, while Fred Guardineer and Bernard Baily also contributed interior art. CGC notes this as “From the Jon Berk collection” and “Conservation includes: cover cleaned, cover reinforced, staples replaced.” Overstreet 2020 GD 2.0 value = $ 240,000; VG 4.0 value = $ 480,000; FN 6.0 value = $ 840,000.
Superman # 1 (DC, 1939) CGC Apparent VG- 3.5 Extensive (B-5) Cream to off-white pages. A landmark book that currently ranks third on Overstreet’s Top 100 Golden Age Comics list. At the time of its publication, it was unheard of to devote an entire series to a character who was created for the comics rather than proven success from cartoons or newspaper strips, and he became one of the many standards set by the man of Steel. This restored copy presents remarkably well for one with major repairs. This issue features the Origin of Superman, with a cover, art story, and back cover pinup by Joe Shuster. CGC notes: “The restoration includes: a touch of color, added parts, tear seals, reinforced.” Overstreet 2020 GD 2.0 value = $ 113,000; VG 4.0 value = $ 226,000.
Auctions for these items begin on Friday May 28 with the Comic Book Signature Auction is scheduled to end between June 17-19.
