The gun master who hated guns in Clue Comics # 10 from 1946, up for auction
BD clue # 10 from Hillman Periodicals features the debut of a character you wouldn’t expect to find in a late-Golden Age comic book: the Gun Master, who has sworn to “make a crusade against the fire arms “. The blurb on the title page sets the scene:
There was once a great threat to the life of the world… yes… a threat of unlimited destruction… and as dreaded as the atomic power of today! It all started long ago with a blinding flash of light in the silent regions of forbidden Tibet… it was the birth of the rifle.
From there, the story develops a very unusual character in the context of the comics of the time. With the growing popularity of detective comics, Hillman’s Gun Master stood out with an explicit message against guns. The story of Gun Master begins with a flashback to the inventor of gunpowder, named Kattak Po in this story. The story essentially combines the invention of gunpowder and guns in simultaneous developments of Kattak Po. The inventor is fatally injured by a thief who wants the destructive power of guns for himself, but before dying, Kattak Po writes a letter to his eldest son, telling him to destroy the villain and his “destructive tool before he destroys mankind”.
The attempt to stop the use of firearms ultimately passes to Kattak Po’s grandson, who swears, “I will dedicate my whole life to stopping the use of this murderous tube that shoots projectiles.”
And it spans the generations, with this comic book story showing the increasingly destructive use of more and better weapons, with the descendants of Kattak Po vowing to continue the fight against them through the generations.
The Gun Master series lasted until the end of the ephemeral Clue comics title, with the legendary Jack kirby manage the last two installments.
