WKRP Turkey Drop originated in Twin Falls Idaho?

WKRP in Cincinnati is one of the reasons I am a broadcaster. The show was a staple in my house when I was a teenager. A few years later, I was working at my third radio station and my program manager told me that one of his former colleagues was a writer for the show. This is why so many situations were very realistic from a radio point of view. A colleague of mine wrote about the death of Frank Bonner last week. He played the salesman Herb Tarlek.
I’ve read that a lot of people claim to have some connection to the origin story, however. The best claim can come from Twin Falls.
There was an episode where Herb was disguised as a station mascot. A giant carp. He enters a bathroom and tries to slip under a pay toilet cubicle. Palms falling to the ground, it was one of the longest sustained laughs of my life. Click here and you will see it around 1:50 in the video.
There was a story about Johnny Fever getting drunk on air as a public service versus DUI. A few years before this episode, my former colleague Jack Mindy had done the same. Mindy’s story is included in a radio book from the 1970s.
Finally, perhaps the biggest episode is the turkey drop. I’ve read that a lot of people claim to have some connection to the origin story, however. The best claim can come from Twin Falls.
In the mid-1970s there was a grocery store with a smaller footprint than the current Fred Meyer. Someone decided to throw turkeys off the roof as a promotion. This morning I received an email from a member of the public detailing how quickly this went wrong
They hit people, cars, etc. causing a lot of minor damage (broken windshields, etc.). They then walked through the parking lot and entered the backyards of houses on Grant Ave (where I now live). It was complete chaos and a complete mess!
Now I would have paid to see this. You can watch the WKRP turkey drop below.
